It makes for a simple and doable day trip especially for a car packed full of a big family. No matter what age or interests you will find something for everyone. Check out these five places to take your day trip that range from ordinary to extraordinary. 

Maymont Richmond, VA
The Maymont in Richmond is a classic, even if you have been before it’s still a great day trip for those who have younger children. There are over 100 acres of land and gardens that are guaranteed to take your breath away. On top of the views, there is a nature center that includes a petting zoo plus a children's farm and wildlife exhibit. As a bonus, you can explore the mansion. Maymont hosts fun events all year long so be sure to check out their calendar before your next visit. 

Virginia Beach, VA
It’s summertime, the weather is warm, a day trip to the beach is calling your name. The best part is that it’s free to go soak up the sun on the sandy beaches or splash in the water. There is a small fee during the summer to park on the beach. Virginia Beach is about a 2 hour trip from Richmond which makes for a perfect family trip. During the evening the city of Virginia Beach provides free entertainment in the summer months. 

Washington, DC 
Skip all the busy season when groups of students are touring the nation's capital. Washington DC and explore it with your own kids. With it being only 100 miles from Richmond, it only makes sense to explore the history-filled town. You could go multiple times because of how much there is to do. Learn more about the history of the nation by visiting the White House, Lincoln Memorial, or a walk on the National Mall to see the famous monuments you’ve read about in textbooks. Luray, VA 
Luray is known for the most popular caverns the East Coast has to offer. it is amazing Luray Caverns that is situated in the breathtaking Shenandoah Mountains. It’s about a two and a half hours from Richmond and is filled with stunning rock formations, mudflows, and mirrored pools. Williamsburg, VA 
In Williamsburg, just a few miles from Busch Gardens lies Virginia's largest water park called Water Country USA. This park is full of thrills and chills plus a whole lot of water.
